Jesus watching disciples argue

The Argument Jesus Overheard

The Argument Jesus Overheard

1st-century Jewish disciples in tunics and head coverings gathered in a heated argument on a dusty road, gesturing emphatically, while a Jesus-like figure stands behind them with his hand on his forehead, warm cinematic lighting and minimalist ancient Israel setting

Sunday's message was such a good reminder for all of us.

The disciples were literally walking with Jesus and still arguing about who was the greatest. It’s almost funny until we realize how much we do the same thing. We want to be seen. We want to be right. We want to matter.

But Jesus flips the whole thing upside down.

The Big Idea

Greatness in the Kingdom isn’t about being first. It’s about becoming a servant.

That’s the contrast in Mark 9:33-41. The disciples are fighting over status, and Jesus starts talking about humility, welcoming a child, and noticing the overlooked. In other words, while they were reaching for position, Jesus was pointing them toward love.

That still hits.

We don’t need to build our own little platform. We don’t need to prove we’re the most important person in the room. We’re at our best when we serve, when we make room, and when we welcome the people others might miss.

A Quick Recap

Jesus hears the argument.
Jesus asks the question.
Everybody gets quiet.

Then He gives them the better way:
"If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all."

That’s the kind of greatness we want. Not loud. Not performative. Just simple, faithful, Jesus-shaped love.
