Beyond the Noise: Why Everything in History Points to Jesus
Beyond the Noise: Why Everything in History Points to Jesus
This Sunday we dug in to something fun.
Have you ever discovered that something you thought was the main point was actually just pointing to something much bigger?
It’s like looking at a sign for your favorite restaurant. The sign isn't the food. It’s just there to tell you that the good stuff is right around the corner.
In our journey as a family church, we often find ourselves wrestling with the "signs." We get caught up in the details of our lives, our struggles, and even our religious traditions. But what if the whole story of history: every mountain, every law, and every prophet: was just a massive signpost pointing to one person?
That person is Jesus.
Today, we’re diving into a moment where the veil between heaven and earth was pulled back. We’re looking at Mark 9, and we’re going to wrestle with what it means to actually listen to the One who stands at the center of it all.
The Problem: A Thousand Competing Voices
Most of us don't struggle because we lack information about Jesus. We live in an age where we can find a thousand sermons with a single click.
We struggle because we have a thousand voices competing for our attention.
Politics. Culture. Religion. Fear. Pride. Our own loud opinions.
Sometimes, in the middle of all that noise, we forget that God has already told us who to listen to. He didn't leave it up for debate.
If you’ve been feeling burned out on traditional religion or overwhelmed by the demands of life, you aren't alone. We’re right there with you. And the answer isn't more "religion": it's a clearer view of Jesus.
Entering the Orchard: The Wisdom of PaRDeS
Before we look at the mountain, we want to share a tool with you. Jewish rabbis have used a framework for centuries called PaRDeS.

The word "PaRDeS" means orchard or garden. The idea is that God’s Word is like a beautiful garden. You can walk through it quickly and enjoy the view, or you can slow down and discover layer after layer of meaning.
Think of it like a diamond. Each side reveals another part of the same truth. Here are the four layers:
PESHAT: The plain meaning. What does the text actually say?
REMEZ: The hints. What clues are hidden beneath the surface?
DERASH: The connections. How does this connect to the rest of Scripture?
SOD: The mystery. What deeper spiritual reality is being revealed?
These layers don't compete; they build on each other. Today, we’re going to walk through the Transfiguration of Jesus using these four steps.
PESHAT: The Story on the Surface
In Mark 9:1-9, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. While they’re there, His appearance completely changes. His clothes become a dazzling, brilliant white: whiter than any bleach could ever make them.
Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appear and start talking with Him. Peter, being Peter, gets overwhelmed and offers to build three shelters. Then a cloud moves in, overshadows them, and a voice speaks:
"This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him." (Mark 9:7 NLT)
At its simplest level, this is God the Father identifying Jesus. He’s saying, "This guy? He’s the one. Stop talking and start listening."
REMEZ: The Breadcrumbs from Sinai
If you were a first-century Jewish disciple, your brain would be screaming "SINAI!" right now.
Mark includes a specific detail in verse 2: "Six days later."
Why six days? Why not "about a week"? Because in Exodus 24, Moses went up Mount Sinai, a cloud covered the mountain for six days, and on the seventh day, God spoke.
Mark is dropping breadcrumbs. He’s telling us that this isn't just a random camping trip. This is a "New Sinai" moment. At the first Sinai, God spoke through Moses. On this mountain, God says, "Listen to Him."
Jesus is the fulfillment of everything that started on that first mountain.
DERASH: The Great Connection
Why were Moses and Elijah there? Why not Abraham or David?

Moses represents the Torah (the Law). Elijah represents the Prophets. Together, they represent the entire testimony of the Hebrew Scriptures.
The "Derash" here is powerful: The goal was never Moses. The goal was never the Law. The Law and the Prophets were always just the warm-up act for Jesus.
When the cloud lifts and the vision ends, Moses and Elijah are gone. Only Jesus remains.
Sometimes we get so focused on the signs: the rules, the traditions, the "way we've always done it": that we miss the person the signs were pointing to. At our family worship service, we try to keep the focus right where it belongs: on Jesus alone.
SOD: The Mystery of the Overlapping Kingdoms
The "Sod" is the deep mystery. On that mountain, the disciples didn't see Jesus become something new; they saw who He has always been.
For a split second, the veil was pulled back. Heaven and earth overlapped. The future glory of the Kingdom broke into the present moment.
Jesus stands at the center of that overlap. He is the bridge. He is the place where God’s glory meets our humanity.
The mystery is that this same glory isn't just for a mountaintop 2,000 years ago. Through the Holy Spirit, that Kingdom life is available to us right now, in our homes and in our church in smithville tn.
The Modern Pharisee Moment
Here is the hard truth we have to wrestle with: It is entirely possible to know a lot about Jesus without actually listening to Him.
That’s the "Modern Pharisee" trap. We can memorize the stories, debate the theology, and attend every service, yet still keep Jesus at arm's length.
God didn't say, "This is my Son, study his biography." He said, "Listen to him."
Listening requires surrender. It requires turning down the volume of our own pride and our own political leanings to hear the whisper of the King.
Why This Matters for Your Family
We believe that strong families lead to strong communities. But a family built on rules and "tired religion" eventually burns out. A family built on listening to Jesus finds grace, freedom, and rest.

When we worship together in a family worship service, we aren't just performing a ritual. We are positioning ourselves to hear from the Son. We are teaching our kids that the whole story: from the first page of Genesis to the last page of Revelation: is all about Him.
Everything Points to Jesus
The mountain was never about the mountain.
Moses was never about Moses.
The cloud was never about the cloud.
Everything: the Torah, the Prophets, the history of Israel: points to Jesus.
And we want to let GOD user own personal stories to point to Jesus too.
The most important question you can ask today isn't "What do I know about the Bible?" It's "Am I listening to Jesus?"
If you're looking for a community that's focused on relationship over religion, we’d love for you to join us. We gather every Sunday at 11AM at Greenbrook Park, located at 812 Fisher Ave, Smithville, TN, and we'd love for you to join us for Church at the park all summer long. You can check out our past sermons or learn more about what we believe.
Let’s stop getting lost in the noise and start listening to the Son.
